Review Summary
Overall, users generally like AllTrails for its detailed trail maps, GPS tracking, and the ability to find new local trails, but they frequently encounter issues with GPS signal, app crashes, excessive ads for the paid version, subscription costs, and poor customer service.
Using this app as much better than following the dotted lines on a Google map. The trail is made much clearer, and honestly the GPS seems to follow along a little bit better. Don't know why that would be. As a senior that has to be careful about difficulty and length of trail, this app helps me find trails that are more remote, yet within my capabilities.
easy to use, allows me to find a bunch of trails that are near my house, that I never knew existed. the search features are excellent and the community contribution of pictures and maps is excellent. My only complaint has less to do with the app and more to do with the deficit of good signage on some trails. I also have the ability to build your own maps, using existing trails. I have recently started adding my own maps. I use this app pretty much every weekend to stay fit with my daughter.
The paid version does not work on my phone anymore! Yesterday in the middle of my hike it completely stopped tracking saying I had no GPS signal even though my Garmin watch had zero issues with finding GPS. Then I couldn't even pause the app and it became completely unresponsive. I had to force quit and then hours later when I was at home it started tracking my hike again. Thinking it was a fluke. I hiked another trail today in the wide open with absolutely zero signal issues. Same issue.

Hi there - thanks a ton for the feedback! For the best experience, we recommend loading your map into your recorder to help prevent this from happening. The recorder will keep the app engaged and will prevent the phone from killing background apps.
Update AGAIN: App keeps losing GPS signal while on trail even when I have full service. Continually get a pop-up blaming a battery optimizer or battery saver as the cause of this malfunction but I do not have any of those settings turned on my phone. The app is great esp if you get the paid version but lately it will not save my reviews. It says thanks for posting and then never posts. I tried several times over days and it won't save anything I type for a review, not even my rating.

There is no way to drop a GPS waypoint on the map. I think it is a must for any hiking app. The other problem is the location indicator. When hiking, it should be smooth as you are changing directions. The location indicator sometimes does not move for up 20 seconds after you change directions. It's not good when you are trying to find your way. It seems alltrails lack the basic essentials for a hiking app.

Hi - Our team has been hard at work over the past few months incorporating the most widely used features of GPSies into our platform. We understand we still have work to do and we appreciate your patience while we continue to improve our platform to better support our global community.
I really wanted to like this app. When I was home, it gave me all the data I was looking for in regards to topography and movement tracking, but out on the trail without cell service it behaved bad. I made sure to download the maps I could before I left, but the application locked up and didn't know what to do when it lost data connection. I canceled the trial before it charged me, but I would have gladly paid for it.

Hi - thanks for your feedback. Our website has a route-building tool for creating maps, but this is not yet available on the app. You can create maps on the website, then access them in the app. If you have questions please email us at [email protected].
Pushing AllTrails+ too hard. I understand a company needs to make money, but showing an ad for AllTrails+ EVERY time I save a map to a list is excessive and decreased my user experience enough I just decided to delete the app and look for an alternative. I tried AllTrails+ for a year and decided it just wasn't for me. Overall not a bad app, but I don't like having ads pushed that excessively.
Developer response:
Hello - you do not need to opt into the free trial for the AllTrails+ subscription if you don't want to. You can dismiss this pop-up and then keep using the free version of the app.
I like the app quite a bit. I've mostly used the free version and generally find it to be adequate for my needs. I did use the "free trial" of the plus version, and I appreciated the additional features, but not enough to shell out 36 bucks. My suggestion would be to have a monthly rate that works out to a bit more than the $36/year. Maybe 4.99 /month could be the 3rd option. Perfect for those that do most of their hiking on vacation or just in the summer. Keep the annual for those that want it

The app works great for following a trail. I primarily have it for that. However I bought the upgrade and needs more features with the purchased version. Like each mnt name having its name showing on it like a map calls it out. The paid version allows to preview a trail. It will allow me to pause and rotate the view, when I play the preview, it rotates back to its standard view, which means I lose sight of the trail on the opp. side of the mountain.

Indispensable tool for determining the right hike for my given energy level, mix of companions or when traveling. The preview mode is particularly helpful as it allows you to "fly over" the route getting a sense of the terrain and elevations. GPS tracking with offline maps is also useful in keeping on the chosen trail. I'm sure there are other features I've not used. I should caveat I'm commenting on the paid version so some features like the offline maps are not available in the free version
