Review Summary
People generally do not like the Step Counter - Pedometer app due to increased and intrusive ads, step counting inaccuracies, and frequent crashes and bugs, although some users appreciate its features when working correctly.
When I first favorably reviewed this app 3 years ago I said the ads were unobtrusive, but that has changed drastically for the worse. On opening you immediately see one or more ads that absolutely cannot be closed without clicking through to the sponsor. You have to close the app and reopen it to get to the functions. I have never before seen an app that has the sheer nerve to behave in this way. Do they really think people will submit to this?!
Developer response:
Hi Paul. There is a close button after the ad finishes playing. Since the app is free to use, displaying ads allows us to earn a small profit. You can also remove ads by subscribing to the 'Remove Ads' option on the 'More' page. We apologize for any inconvenience.
I've used this app for several years and loved it. Recently, it has mostly stopped counting my steps. I have changed nothing for it to do that. It literally says 0 almost every day, even though I work in a school where I go up and downstairs throughout the workday, from classroom to classroom. What good is a step counting app that doesn't count steps?

this app has served me well for so long now, I have hit the achievement of the Sydney walk so far. however it doesn't work anymore. it doesn't count steps, until I turn on the app, and when I turn on the app , it counts two steps and immediately crashes. I've tried everything and don't know what to do. i don't want to lose my progress but I'm really disappointed. kindly fix this issue.

Most accurate counter I found. Better than my $300 smart watch... was 5 stars months ago - but now counts steps while driving even on the lowest sensitivity. Never happened before. Now it's every trip. Same vehicle, same phone holder, nothing different. A little disappointed that I have to pause it before my commute. However, it works when I really need it. Thank you.
Developer response:
Hi Carolina, under certain driving conditions, the system may mistakenly count steps due to limitations, which can depend on factors like your driving situation and the placement of your phone. If this issue occurs, you can tap the 'PAUSE' button to pause the pedometer. We are actively working on resolving this. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Inaccurate I walked 300 steps while counting as I went. I ran this app at the same time as another. That app had a 4% deviation (287/300) and this had a 20% deviation (241/300). Both are off, but this is substantially low. Same phone, same sensor, same conditions, same time... they should produce similar results. Several hours later, the results varied significantly... First app 5867, this app 5372. I only counted 300 of these steps, but you can see how the deviations compound over a distance.

Hi Keith, we apologize for any inconvenience caused. We are committed to improving the algorithm and hope to provide you with a better experience in the future.
This used to be 5 stars, back when you only had to watch an ad if you wanted to leave the main screen. I changed it to a 1 star because now after 2 years there are ads you can't skip at all as soon as the app is opened. I track my steps for work. Sometimes I'm in a rush and don't have 2-3 minutes to wait for an ad to play. I'm going to be finding a new app.
Developer response:
Hi Lily, sorry for the inconvenience. We will try to adjust our ads strategy to minimize the interruption. You can also remove ads by the "Remove ads" subscription on the "More" page. This app is completely free for all users, so we need to display ads to earn some meager profits. Thank you for understanding.
Does what it needs to. One thing missing is a option to turn on when the phone restarts. I often go for days not realising that it's not recording. Edit: far too many adverts now, blocking the display & making navigation & exiting very difficult. Plenty of better alternatives so uninstalling. Thanks for reply. There is no 'how to fix' item on the 'more' page.
Developer response:
Hi, sorry for the inconvenience. As the app is entirely free for users, we rely on displaying ads to generate some minimal revenue. You can conveniently access the navigation bar by swiping up from the bottom of your screen. Please send us a feedback email with the description of your problem via "More--Feedback".
I love your app!! I just wanted to say thank you for such a well rounded, and thoughtful app. I love everything about it. I've been using the app for 20 months. I've just finished the Sahara Desert 🏜 😅 I also believe the app has helped me to reach my goal in losing weight. The stretching and exercises are helpful and simple to follow. It is well worth paying for ad free. I actually wish the levels and goals were set higher, I've completed or maxed on most. But, overall amazing.
Recently in 2024 this App Leaped into NEW SYSTEM LIMITATIONS. Now to get accurate step counts requires granting them full access PERMISSIONS to your very valuable data storage files. Not doing so results in inaccurate step counts. Now I am a ‘no ads’ yearly paid Subscriber. For years I loved it before being required to grant these intrusive Permissions for accuracy. It was great BEFORE the change - 5 stars. I wish I could say that now.The good news is: When they change, so can WE.

Hi Yolanda, we’re really sorry for the issue you encountered. Could you please send us a screenshot along with a description of the problem via "More → Feedback"? Thank you!
So far so good. Been using it for just under a month because I dislike the pedometer/health app that comes pre-installed on my phone. Simple amd easy interface, and it only has just enough on the main screen that I need at a glance: steps, miles, time spent walking, calories, and water tracking if turned on. I wish the home screen widget was a little better but its not a problem, I tend not to use widgets anyway. I do like that the app celebrates when I reach my hard earned goal though :)
