Review Summary
People have mixed feelings about the Monash University FODMAP diet app: while some find it helpful for managing their diet with useful information and a comprehensive food listing, others criticize its poor user interface, lack of search functionality, inconsistent data presentation, and issues with the food diary feature, making it frustrating to use.
I've had the app about one day as directed by my dietician. You would think basic items to search, Salmon for example (fresh from Costco USA) would be easy to find the details but only canned salmon is available. Which I don't eat it. Also, when I'm searching salmon things like almond and oranges are coming up. I do wish it was more global friends and user friendly (33yo). I'm going to try it for another week before I make a decision to remove it.
Developer response:
Hi Kyree, thanks for the feedback. Some foods are listed more generally (e.g. instead of salmon, you can find 'Fish, all varieties'), especially if these are foods that are naturally low FODMAP. We do appreciate the feedback and can look into other wording. Please reach out to us at [email protected] if you have any other questions.
I'm glad that this app exists because there aren't many low fodmap resources out there. However, this doesn't give the user control over changing the serving size of different foods and it doesn't tell you how much fodmaps are in different serving sizes, and instead uses an arbitrary color classification. This is unhelpful because I sometimes eat a meal with multiple low fodmap foods that adds up to a high fodmap meal and this app makes it impossible to know how much fodmap I'm actually eating.
Developer response:
Hi Katherine, thanks for the feedback. We do not include specific FODMAP quantities tracking this is not necessary on the diet. We understand that the diet can be burdensome already, so our conservative FODMAP cut-offs used in the app take away the need to track specific FODMAP quantities (e.g. similar to tracking calorie/kilojoule intake).
If you are new to FODMAP, this is a good resource. If you already have a base understanding but want to get more detailed, it may not be worth it. I wish the search feature worked better, that's primarily why I bought it. Searching for something remotely specific or a brand name results in either random results or no results. If you want to look up "potato" or "sourdough bread" and never get any more specific, it will work fine. In terms of tracking symptoms, Guava is free and much better.
Developer response:
Hi Carly, thanks for your feedback. Our food guide is composed mostly of general listings, rather than specific brands, as these general entries can be used to get an understanding of the FODMAP rating of a food across a variety of brands, which helps keep the app useful around the globe.
This app is easy to use and helps me maintain a low fodmap diet. I was resistant to purchase it and used other apps, but I found that to be able to trust that the information on food amounts, stacking, and which sugar is the culprit, I need this app. I like the color coding system and the diary-symptom tracker. If I traveled, the multinational food look-up would be great. I'd like to be able to look up more food combinations, but overall, I'm thankful for the app.

Hi there, thanks for your review. It's great to hear you find the app so useful!
Diary Disaster! It cannot keep an accurate account of the food diary. The app saves on the wrong date and is impossible to use consistently. It makes it quite frustrating. And it would be awesome if the app communicated between devices but it needs to be entered separately. However the food info is great and will be helpful in transitioning into the reintroduction phase. But I am considering going back to paper & pen to monitor my progress since the diary is worthless.

Hi Barb, thanks for your review. We are always looking to improve the experience for our users, and really appreciate the feedback.
I love this app, it shows me what food fits in the fodmap diet and how much to take it. Also the food diary is very thorough and helpful. One bug I found w the update is when you load the diary screen, it shows the current day but the calendar is set to the day before so nothing is logged. One has to remember to tap on the calendar to ensure it's logged for today, otherwise it will log it into yesterday, even though its showing today.
Food search is all I care about with this app, but it is lacking. One of the problems I have is that many foods have different names. If I don't know how it was entered, I might not find it. For instance, Napa cabbage is entered as Chinese cabbage. Also, if a food isn't listed then there is no feedback. It's difficult to tell if there are no results or the app is still loading. I really wish the food search feature was the only focus. It's not user friendly and desperately needs work.
I love how informative this app is. Their food list is very expansive and inclusive. I took off two stars, however, because there isn't a search feature, which means you have to scroll through these long lists until you find the food item you're looking for. I really hope they add a search feature soon, because it would save a lot of time and make the app a lot more user-friendly in doing so!

Hi there, thank you for your review. There is a search function, sorry if it's not an obvious motion to find it. Instead of scrolling down in the guide just scroll up and the search function will appear or pull down with your fingers.
Not worth the price. Not super helpful for a US user. Unorganized food lists. Prioritizes foods and meals that are certified towards the top of searches, but not available to me, locally. The stoplight serving size order or organization is random (sometimes the smallest serving is shown first, sometimes the largest is shown first). Would have been nice to have a free version to explore before dropping the money on the whole thing.

Hi Rikki, sorry you are disappointed with the app. We appreciate the feedback you have provided. If you purchased the app in the last 6 months we can offer you a refund. Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]
This app is fantastic and well worth the $9.00 it costs. Not only does it have tons of foods, all the foods it contains are broken down into accepted amounts. It gives the recommendations for low, medium, and high fodmaps servings for each food. It even tells you which types of fodmaps it contains. This app is invaluable for people with sibo and I can't believe I ever relied on Google and random food blogs to try and tell me what is acceptable to eat.
